Perhaps some new choons from his midi-nes based album (untitled as of yet, my suggestion: 'take it out and blow on it') And an interview, and a rock block of his favorite things including influences and current faves like happyhardcore, nate dawg, and various beats both block rocking and otherwise.

http://www.myspace.com/evanmorris

lostscience.org

session3- November10th 7pm

Wyatt Gurp aka kevin, baron von circuitry, gamer extrordinaire, wearer of heightening shoes will be providing a set of his tunes. His baby, the circuitry web site/web label/blog/lol cat host should be fully operational and perhaps some of the precious data from there will be shared. So come and check it out>
If you want new ideas about design and interaction, ask a musician. Before the Wii remote, the iPhone, Microsoft’s Surface, and Minority Report, musicians were trying oddball ideas for music performance. That hasn’t slowed down, either, from the futuristic and space-y to down-and-dirty acoustic techniques. We’ve got quite a gamut coming up for our madcap, sound and noise-packed hour of competition happening this Saturday at NASA’s Ames Research center during Yuri’s Night, and we’d love to share them with everyone online.

For starters, here’s the rundown of the projects with links to project sites and artists, and all the judges:

Futuristic Music Design Challenge: Meet the Competitors, Judges

Join the event on Facebook

The projects: the Bubblegum Sequencer (previously on CDM), The Box custom hardware with colored lights + Reaktor ensemble, the surface-temperature tangible interface table Weather Report (previously on CDM), the strange polygonal Kromatron wireless instrumental interface, the Thimbletron gloves-as-samplers with lab coated performers project (previously on CDM), the bicycle wheel and analog tape Looping Pedal (previously on CDM), the computer-powered musical saw WaveSaw, the 28-string just-intoned microtonal casmolyra, the turntablist custom software ammoBox and the GrooveStep DS pattern maker (previously on CDM).

I’m also pleased to announce…

The judges:

* Roger Linn, father of the modern drum machine (in my opinion, anyway) and creator of the MPC60 for Akai, plus recent creations — and he plays the mandolin
* Liz Enthusiasm, lead singer of Freezepop (check out their albums or just play a Harmonix game) and evidently an expert on Dr. Pepper
* (Matt) Ganucheau, a mastermind of Yuri’s Night’s music and art, a composer and sound designer (and teacher of sound design for games), an electronic musician, and creator of the NSFW "foreplay robot" Moaning Lisa
* … and yours truly as emcee

Speaking of Roger Linn, Tom at Music Thing just posted an auction on the pre-Akai prototype.

Hopefully we’ll get to do some quick interviews with the judges, as well, for Planet CDM. Stay tuned on yuricdm.com.

LINK
evanMorris' feed.

new track up at hexawe

I have a new track up at http://hexawe.net/ ,theCountess_by_evanMorris.mp3. I'm adding 32 knobs and resetting the buttons to a more user friendly placement. I also didn't want to make it not look like a monome.. because that is not me. After this hardware project I am going to build a sidbox which, is the ucapps version of sidstation but, better and way more cooler because, what is the funny of spending 1,000 dollars for something you can build for yourself for around $200. DIY !!!!!!
The nds synth project will be done is about two weeks if I was to guess. I have most of it done and need to test and compile a few things. We will see. Most of what I have been doing was building a file saver for the presets for the 16 channels of audio. In retrospect, I probably should have not written all this code (over 1,000 lines) because, since this is going to be controlled by midi sequencers on computer that could easily save the preset for each project. Though there will be no way for the computer sequencer could save the files that are saved in the fat directory but, I guess I could assume that the files from the fat would always be loaded to the same position in the fat array structure. It could however run into problems since I wouldn't want to load all raw sound files into the memory. More things to think about I guess.
evanMorris' feed.

more nds FatNess

So I finally got most of the NDS Fat System loaing work out. It is however taking me a lot longer then I expected to write the file format to save the Presets of all the nds sound channels in a smooth and polymorphic way. Though I am writing mostly in the straight c because, my plan to learn c++ or at least the hierachitical elements of the language, has been put on hold until I finish the this file loader. I have written almost 500 lines of code plus comments, all straight with out compiling which seems really dangerous to me who has never written I file format loader in something like c. I have done basic text processing in php, pearl, ruby, etc but these language are not as complicated as using fread, fwrite, fIwantToConfuseYou... it is maybe not that bad and infact it isn't. Though I isn't a cake walk either. I'm thinking once I get this working I will be pretty much done with Version 1. I'm not sure if I can take the mental abuse to create a version 2 but, I will need to take a serious break before I come back to this. Plus I still have to finish writing the documentation for this software, and finish my thesis about it... oh and I have to finish my music thesis. work work work
evan
evanMorris' feed.

awesome stuff

acapellas anyone?
http://www.jamglue.com/

Midines
turn your nes into a synth!
http://www.wayfar.net/0xf00000_overview.php

japanese bugfighting?
http://japanesebugfights.com/
evanMorris' feed.

NDS Synth Fat Fixed

So I recently fixed the issue I was having trying to load samples off rom card using the Fat Spec. What seems to have been the problem is that the flags in the arm complier need to be set to a different chip. I found this out by comparing my MakeFile against that of what was in the PALIB test files which, were working. I'm not sure if the devprokit is were I got those flags from. The process of putting together the Makefile for me to compile my scripts was really insane since, I need to have it link to my coded arm7 main file since that is where all the sound source code is. Oh, the ds has to processors an arm9 and arm7, so what that means is that you have to write two different programs to run on each processor. It is a was a little bit tricky for me to first get my head rap around but, after awhile it seem kind of easy. So, with this fix I will be able to have people load their own samples in the synth. Though it wouldn't have a file browser right off, since that will take me a least a week to implement and develop, so, instead it will just load files out of a wav directory into memory automatically.
On other fronts I haven't been able to test out my midines/reaktor setup yet because, I have got my powersupply or my 73 pin cartridge slot in the mail yet... the same is also true for my parts for my redux interface.
= (
evanMorris' feed.

nds synth project getting closer to a version release

I have been working really hard on my nds synth project and have been getting closer and closer to have a new and improved version completed. I had to embed the samples into the rom itself because I was having a lot of trouble getting the fat libs working with everything else that is going on. I having a funny feeling that it might have something to do with the wifi setup functions, because I have been having a lot of issues when I completely remove their implementation from the rom... "problems" like the sounds refuse to play. I've got around this problem by having the wifi run but, it no longer locks up the system if it can't connect to a wifi host. This isn't a very good way to do it but, it is a hack that works and at this point that is all I care about... it working.
evanMorris' feed.

midines and reaktor

Yes, I am working on a way of adding midines to my liveset. I am developing a way to use reaktor as sort of midi remixer, so that it can control the midines live. Most of the Reaktor stuff is already done for the most part, though I am thinking of adding a way to process midi files into something that reaktor can understand... It seems kind of strange that Reaktor can't read midi files. All of this will have to wait because, I need to replace the 72 pin connect in the nes to make it work.
= (
evanMorris' feed.

videos from hotel utah

I kind of busy with school and such so I haven't been posting too much. .. Well because, I spend enough time writing for that. Anyways, I am having problems with getting the fat libs to work across different flash cards. I'm not sure if it is the cards or the memory, it is very hard to figure it out when your tests live far anyway from. The second big issue is that the rom is crashing when it loads everything into memory at startup.. It seems to work only if I slow down processing with N^2 loops. I kind of think it might be due to the hardware because, I am using a slot 1 and slot 2 card to load the roms. So, I think that data might not be moving quickly enough into memory.. ahh maybe I should probably test this.
evanMorris' feed.

DS Synth Demo

Ok I haven't been keeping up with this blogger business... but it is never to late to start again. So, here are some random things that I think I could possibly do.
At this moment I looking to at least build something similar to the nanoloop to start out with.Since, the built in squares waves, noise, and wav tables would be a good place to start.Maybe with an added ability to change wave forms on the fly kind of like what the c64 chip does... maybe arp. or some effects. Though most of these will have a trade off on how much of the processor this would suck up.. I was thinking that since I am writing for the DS it would be nice to have the ability to draw wave tables in with the touch screen. I was also thinking about having the DS be kind of a hardware synth since, there exists software to send wifi midi data to the DS. So, you could send midi data out of fruityloops to the ds and have in play back stuff in it's grungy glory.

Stay in touch.. I will probably need people to beta test this in a few month what ever it ends up being.

; )
evanMorris' feed.

On to GBA sound programming

So I am finally almost at the end of the tunnel with my learning about how to program about the GBA and I have made it to the Audio Programming part. Too bad that TONC doesn't really describe anything useful about this subject in their tutorial. So, I had to spend a bunch of time digging around for some good resources about this subject.
Here are the links I found:
LINK
this is a good place to get an over view of all the non-sampled based audio channels, well expect for the wave table, the others are two square wave and a noise generators.
LINK
This is the more hardcore one. It isn't a good place to start when learning about Audio Programming because, it assumes that you already know more information then what is given to you in the TONC tutorial. So, it is best to start with the first one.

I still have a ways to go but I'm making some progress.
evanMorris' feed.

so you want to program for the gba

So, more then month into this my gba programming I have a learned a lot. The first and probably the most important was finding a good tutorial on this subject. The only one that I would recommend would be TONC. It has the most up to date information all aspects of gba development and even goes as far as to correct other tutorial faults.

That said this is definitely not for the weak. This has to be the most comprehensive field of programming because, you are deal with all aspects of programming, from binary math, assembly, memory management, interrupts, etc. making it enough to make any programs head spin. Though, with this said it is also extremely liberating in that it allows to have control over what the hardware is doing since, there is not operating system to deal with. For myself, I'm on the fence about how much I like this but, I keep tell myself that it will make me a better programmer.I how it does.
evanMorris' feed.

summer of c programming

So, I done with school for the summer and I'm right back at the Gameboy programming. The syntax is a little different that I am use to but I've been programming in python so it should be an improvement over that. I am going to connect them to the main unit using ethernet cable(cat5), which will allow me to be able to reposition the box at different angles for a more optimal performance set up. The issue that I am debating about is to where to actually place the analog in card in relation to the box, it will either be inside the box or outside the main box and connecting to all the knob and fader boxes. Another problem it that I am going to have to have more they one cat5 connection in each fader/knob box since, the max number of singles connection I can get through one connect is 7 and plus one for ground.. which I guess isn't to bad since I am only thinking about adding 32 controls in total.
The second project is one that I have been slowly working up to over the past year or so, which is that I am going to develop some type of music software for the nintendo ds. I been talking about doing this for so long but, the fact that I have barely anytime when I am in school to do anything has been making my progress on this project extremely drawn out. Anyways, the idea I have it have some small modular synth environment that will be like a strip down version of Reaktor. This is only an idea and probably will evolve into something completely different because, I need to really get a grip on the platform a bit more before I can say for sure what it will be like. So, this will be my summer project and a very long summer it will be.
; )
evanMorris' feed.

beyond the valleys of the dolls.. awesome!

Any movie about the an all girl group in the late 1960's is a plus.... but add Russ Meyer directing. The issue I have is that I do not have a video cam. anymore since I sold it to get the parts for this thing.( The video clips that are in this post are from my digital camera(picture)) I built a little reaktor patch to do the animating that is seen in the video. I'm might include some some of this kind of stuff in a different performance patch latter.
So, unless someone in the bay area wants to help make a video demo for this toy,
= )
this will be all that I can give you for awhile.

Basic Info about the box
Built under the ucapps midibox spec.
The buttons are from sparks electronics but, they do not directly work with the ucapps spec. In fact, it'd be quite a large understatement -- the only instrument featured on the record (as far as I could discern) is a classical guitar, or, to be more accurate, some rather finely sliced classical guitar samples.
Of course, minimalism is the whole point. It's hardly like Evan Morris was too lazy to use any other instrument -- in fact, I suspect the exact opposite. I can just picture him agonisingly fighting the urge to go all out and throw in a few of his usual glitchy, digital drum sounds. In the end, though, the finished product is much better for it.

As you might have guessed, it's a wonderfully relaxing album, gently exuding the sort of calm atmosphere in which, if you're not careful, you can easily find yourself completely absorbed. It's 'ambient' exactly as Eno defined it: "...as ignorable as it is interesting."

Sadly, this atmosphere is tainted somewhat by the constant hiss of the poor-quality samples. While the incidental clicks and pops (where the samples have been sliced) of some tracks are a welcome addition, providing a certain extra rhythm, the hiss is simply irritating, and makes listening to the record at a reasonably high volume unpleasant. Another small gripe is with the mastered volume of tracks -- it seems to vary quite significantly throughout the course of the album, making constant volume-knob-adjustment a neccesity.

While Names Between Information is decidedly lacking on the production side of things, it contains some fantastic compositions and is elegant in its simplicity."

evanMorris' feed.

I found this these new rubber button from sparkfun through the make blog. They even say that they where inspired by the monome in creating them.. (I'm sure the people at monome are loving this). Though they haven't yet got the boards that work with them on sale yet.. making them pretty worth less until they do. Once they do I'll probably buy enough of these parts to create another magic box. The size of which I haven't yet figured out, maybe just a small 4x4, for switching between sample sets in my live patch. But another part of me wants to have a back up for the box or maybe even a 128 button box. That would be nice, 128 buttons, but the rubber alone would cost me something 160 dollars... . I'll just wait and see how much the boards will cost from spark before I come to a conculsion. The backend will once again be from ucapps.
Here is a little chat I had about this on the em411
evanMorris' feed.

New Album out on Earth Monkey Productions. They where orginally released as two different records but I took the best tracks off of both and made it into one record that is pretty solid. Lostscience is also going to rerelease my classical guitar album "the distance in the rain" in the next few weeks. I am also finishing up a new all new guitar record that will be released in the next few months. I was hoping to maybe get it released on another record label. Anyone interest?
I also need to build a new website .. man busy busy busy.
evanMorris

evanMorris' feed.

MixMaster

This is your live remix superstation. This was a little demo i put together when I was testing to see how the core of my live patch would work with a live sampler. So you are going to have to push your own audio signal into the patch. There are some slight audio artifacts happening over the time that it is running. It has something to do with the play head and the record head being used at the sametime. Anyway this is pretty much the skeleton of my live patch so enjoy.

Post comments if you download and use this please.
; )
evan
Link to the Patch(reaktor 5 only)

evanMorris' feed.

My Magic Box

So, I made a box here is a picture:

And here is another:

What does it do?

It would be ten pages of writing to explain what it does so here is video instead because, I am lazy at the moment.
Link

Want to here a set with it?

Here is a mp3 of one of my sets.....
Link

evanMorris
evanMorris' feed.
